Alana Burke

A Youth Profile on Perseverance Discipline and Excellence

Alana Burke was challenged with a cross country move to a city and new school. Alana has remained academically disciplined, enjoys travel, and studying abroad, and making new friends. Even though Alana moved across the country, she was named Valedictorian of her new High School class.

Alana moved from a place in the South she considered home to the inner city of Detroit where she knew only relatives. For Alana, school provided the portal where she could forget all the many challenges that confronted her. At some point during her sophomore year, she decided she would be the valedictorian of her class. So, with that goal in mind, she started working towards becoming valedictorian and didn’t stop; she had decided nothing would deter her. She took challenging classes, studied hard and remained balanced by cultivating new positive minded friends. Alana’s hard work paid off and she was the valedictorian of her High School class and received many scholarship offers.

When it was time for Alana to go to college Alana chose the University of Michigan which initially considered her an out-of-state student which required her to pay higher out-of-state tuition prices. Despite having lived in Michigan for a total of 9 years, and since her high school transcript included an out of state high school, Alana had to apply to be considered eligible for in-state tuition. Thankfully, her application was approved, and she was offered enough scholarship money that didn’t require her to pay any money out of pocket for her first year.

Alana is now spending 6 weeks in London England as part of a study abroad program through the University of Michigan. While there Alana, along with 21 other youth females study race and ethnicity, courses that focus on community action, supporting positive social change while learning about and understanding cultural diversity. Outside of studying, Alana and the other young ladies have made time to go on small trips to places like Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton, and Dublin.
